What is anemia?
Anemia is a condition in which you do not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to your body. Anemia can be temporary or long-term (chronic). Although most cases are mild, anemia can be serious and even life-threatening.
Anemia can happen because:
- Your body doesn’t make enough red blood cells.
- Bleeding causes you to lose red blood cells more quickly than they can be replaced.
- Your body destroys red blood cells.

- Use of certain medications. Some medications, such as those used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and some antibiotics, can cause aplastic anemia.
- Autoimmune diseases. An autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks healthy cells may involve stem cells in your bone marrow.
- A viral infection. Viral infections that affect the bone marrow can play a role in the development of aplastic anemia. Viruses associated with aplastic anemia include hepatitis, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, micro virus B19, and HIV.
- Pregnancy. Your immune system may attack your bone marrow during pregnancy.
- Unknown factors. In many cases, doctors are unable to determine the cause of aplastic anemia (idiopathic aplastic anemia).

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is a rare, life-threatening disease. It causes blood clots, destroys blood cells, and impairs bone marrow function. It’s a genetic condition, usually diagnosed in people who are in their 30s or 40s.
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria is related to aplastic anemia. It often starts as aplastic anemia or arises after treatment for the condition.
Myelodysplastic syndromes
Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of conditions that cause the blood-making cells in your bone marrow to become abnormal. Your bone marrow then doesn’t make enough cells, and the cells it does make are generally defective. These cells die earlier and are more likely to be destroyed by your immune system.
Myelodysplastic syndromes are considered a type of cancer. They may turn into acute myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer.

Acquired hemolytic anemia
With this type of anemia, you are not born with a certain disease. Your body makes normal red blood cells, but they are later destroyed. This can happen because of
- Certain infections, which may be viral or bacterial
- Medications, such as penicillin, antimalarial drugs, sulfonamides, or acetaminophen
- Blood cancers
- autoimmune diseases, such as lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, or ulcerative colitis
- Certain tumors
- Overactive spleen (hypersplenism)
- Mechanical heart valves may cause damage to red blood cells as they leave the heart
- Severe reactions to blood transfusions
Some types of acquired hemolytic anemia are short-term (temporary) and disappear within a few months. Other types may become lifelong (chronic). They may disappear over time and come back again.
Can sickle cell disease anemia kill you?
Sickle cell disease is an inherited form of anemia. It causes your red blood cells to become deformed - they become sickle-shaped, stiff, and sticky. This causes them to get stuck in small blood vessels, which impedes blood flow throughout the body and deprives tissues of oxygen. This is more common in Africans.
Sickle cell disease causes very painful attacks, swelling, and frequent infections.
Can thalassemia anemia kill you?
Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that causes your body to not make enough hemoglobin. This is a protein that is an important part of red blood cells. Without enough hemoglobin, your red blood cells do not work properly and die faster than healthy cells.
Thalassemia can be mild or severe. It can become severe if you inherit two copies of the gene that causes the disease.

Malarial anemia is a major symptom of severe malaria. Many factors can contribute to its development, including

Can Fanconi anemia kill you?
Fanconi anemia (FA) is an inherited disease that damages your bone marrow, causing you to have a lower than a normal number of all types of blood cells.
Fanconi anemia also usually causes physical abnormalities such as thumb or forearm deformities, bone abnormalities, kidney deformities or defects, gastrointestinal abnormalities, infertility, and vision and hearing problems.
Fanconi anemia may also lead to an increased risk of leukemia, and cancers of the head, neck, skin, reproductive and gastrointestinal tracts.
Ways to face different kinds of anemia
Anemia causes 1.8 deaths per 100,000 letterheads in the United States each year. But if you can learn about your condition in advance, it is usually treatable. Some types of anemia are chronic, which means they require ongoing treatment.
Treatment for patients with severe anemia will depend on the cause.
Aplastic anemia. People with severe aplastic anemia who are younger than 40 years old are usually treated with a bone marrow transplant. people over 40 years old, or who do not have a good bone marrow match, are usually treated with medications. These medications can reduce symptoms, but they do not cure them. In up to 50% of patients treated with medications, aplastic anemia relapses or develops into another related blood disorder.
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. the median survival time after a PNH diagnosis is 10 years. New treatments may help people with this disorder live a normal life expectancy.
Myelodysplastic syndrome. Without treatment, the median survival time for myelodysplastic syndrome depends on factors such as the number of chromosomal abnormalities and the level of red blood cells. However, treatment is often successful, especially for certain types of this disease.
Hemolytic anemia. Hemolytic anemia depends on the underlying cause. Hemolytic anemia itself is rarely fatal, especially if treated early and appropriately, but the underlying condition can be fatal.
Sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease reduces life expectancy, although thanks to new treatments, patients with this condition can now live into their 50s and beyond.
Thalassemia. Severe thalassemia can lead to death from heart complications before the age of 30. Excess iron in the blood can be removed with regular blood transfusions and treatment.
Malarial anemia. Malaria is usually curable. However, severe malaria, which is the cause of anemia, is a medical emergency. The mortality rate for severe malaria varies widely, from 1.3% to more than 50%, depending on factors such as overall health status.
Fanconi anemia. A bone marrow transplant can cure severe FA. however, you will still have an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma. Your prognosis also depends on the specific genetic abnormality that causes FA.
